I decided I wanted to spice up the blogs I write so that I can stay on my toes. Pressure makes diamond and with Christmas coming up I don't need anymore coal. So taking an homage to the Yak and John Rich, enter THE BLOG WHEEL
After adding some of my own ideas, I took it upon myself to ask my fellow Breakdown bloggers and close Twitter friends to give me an idea that gets a slice. And the winner of the Blog Wheel Day 1 was...
That's right, the main man himself, Sandos won today. So today's blog will be talking about the top 5 sitcoms in my opinion. But I feel like that's too easy. In order to put a spin on it, just like I spun the wheel, I'm separating them into 3 categories: THE BEST, UNDERRATED, OVERRATED. Now I am limiting myself to two rules:
No animated (sorry Simpsons and Family Guy)
Only ones I've watched (sorry M.A.S.H. and All In The Family)
I figured that keeps it fair. Why would I just include ones that I searched up on the Internet or have had great things about by never seen a single episode? Only makes sense.
THE BEST OF THE BEST
5: PARKS AND RECREATION
The show that launched Chris Pratt's career, kind of revived Rob Lowe's, and gave us Ron Swanson/Nick Offerman and Aubrey Plaza. I think this is actually the better of the two shows the creator made as it fleshed out it's supporting characters like Jerry/Garry and Donna with great and more in-depth storylines.
4: IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA
The gang are some of the worst people to ever exist but by God is this show so damn funny. I will watch Danny DeVito live in squalor with Charlie Day every single time as well as all the hijinks and scams they try to run. There are so many jokes and plot points that if it was any other show, it would've gotten cancelled and "cancelled".
3: CHEERS
A show that made me believe that there are actual regulars at your local small-town bar that can just walk in and the workers don't even have to ask what they want. They just give their order to them. I think it also speaks volumes to how good and popular this show is that a supporting character in it got a spinoff that could very easily be included in the next 5 of "the best of the best".
2: CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM
Larry David is one of the funniest people to ever walk this planet and seeing him play a more dramatized version of himself to go along with JB Smoove, Jeff Garlin, and Cheryl Hines makes for must-see TV that leaves me in tears almost every episode.
1: SEINFELD
These 4 people ran TV for a solid decade because of "a show about nothing". Not only is it arguably the best sitcom ever, it might have a case for the best TV SHOW ever.
UNDERRATED
5: ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT
The Bluth family are legitimately insane and this show has an endless amount of running bits from Tobias being "a never-nude" and the man himself Gene Parmesan. If you're a fan of dry humor and satire, please watch.
4: WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS
Vampires living in the modern world and their servant/familiar coming from a line of vampire hunters? 9 out of 10 people would guess this is a dramatic show or some teen girl's favorite show. But nope this is truly one of the funniest shows I have ever seen and Matt Berry's line deliveries are some of the best things to ever grace a TV screen.
3: COMMUNITY
Think about this. This show is so good and funny that it's best episodes about a paintball war happening on campus got the directors of those episodes hired to direct some movies. Those movies? Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. I'll leave it at that.
2: BROOKLYN NINE-NINE
Andy Samberg could be in a show about paint drying and I would watch it. NINE-NINE!
1: PSYCH
This is legit my favorite show of all time. A childish man with total recall trained by his detective dad that gets his childhood best friend to join him in a private detective agency to help solve murders for the cops while being "psychic"? Yeah this this the best modern interpretation of Sherlock Holmes.
OVERRATED:
I only have 3 for this category:
3: HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER
How is the main character of your show the least likable character? Also the ending sucked and "Legen...wait for it...dary" is so god damn annoying.
2: THE OFFICE
Do I think this is one of the best sitcoms ever? Yes. Do I think this is pretty high in the all-time shows (regardless of genre) rankings? Also yes. But do I think it is the best show to ever be on TV the same way so many people in the United States do? HELL NO. Look I love "The Office" but I am tired of people talking about it like it's freaking Citizen Kane. It's really great but it's not the best EVER. I'm tired of people overrating it and worshipping this show. That's all.
1: FRIENDS
This show just never did anything for me. I watched the whole thing after getting too determined to see it through start to finish. I don't find it THAT funny and I don't find it THAT great.
Good stuff Reed!! Animated would’ve definitely thrown in a twist — maybe in the future, not sure if you’d have as many categories/choices.
A ton of my friends are Family Guy OR South Park, but I never watched a ton of South Park. Archer, Bobs, American Dad & Rick and Morty are all notable of course.
Looking forward to more Blog Wheel!
P.S.
My Best of Best:
HIMYM
The Office
Community
Brooklyn Nine-Nine [maybe recency bias, been watching on Netflix, so possibly flip 4 & 5]
Parks & Rec
**I need to watch more Sunny, Kevin & Feits talk about it plenty & have had 4 of 5 on KFC Radio.
